All About Antioxidants

We don’t know about you, but our skin could use a bit of a pick-me-up right about now especially with the bitey winter wind and the stress of the holidays fast approaching. Deck the halls with anti-oxidants, fa la  la la la la. Just sing it out loud, it totally fits.

Antioxidants are swooping in to spread some love to all the good boys and girls. Okay, we swear we’re done with the Christmas schtick (we just really love Christmas, sheesh).

Antioxidants really are that good though.

What are they?

Antioxidants are substances that help protect the skin's surface from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are essentially-there is some scientific jargon to go along with it, but we’ll keep it simple-a term for the molecules that break down skin's collagen, causing wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines and saggy skin. Those free radicals are definitely on the naughty list (we know! We promised no more holiday stuff. Too bad.).

Antioxidants are often found in skin care product formulas because of their powerful anti-aging benefits. They can combat skin issues by reducing inflammation, allowing the skin to repair itself. Some can even stimulate collagen production (which we all want as we get older!).

What are the best types?

  • CBD (has more antioxidants than vitamin C or E)
  • Vitamin C or ascorbic acid (best version is Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate)
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
  • Resveratrol
  • Vitamin E (tocopherol)
  • Retinol (derivative of Vitamin A)
  • Green tea

When should I use it?

Antioxidants should be applied first after cleansing in the morning. Another benefit they provide is protection from environmental damage, making the morning the best time of day to apply it.

We recommend applying it to damp skin as it helps absorb into the skin more than if it were dry.

So antioxidants definitely make the nice list.
